Australia is organized as a federation of six states and two territories and is governed on the federal level by a prime minister as the chief executive, and a bicameral parliament made up of a House of Representatives and a Senate. Members of the House are elected for three years and members of the Senate for six-year terms. The Senate does not initiate legislation but must approve laws enacted by the House, where all legislation is introduced. The prime minister and his cabinet must have the support of the majority in the House of Representatives, but a majority in the Senate is not required.
